Raymond Smith Obituary

RAYMOND WALTER SMITH, age 90, of Roxboro, NC passed away Friday afternoon, April 12, 2024 at his home. 

Mr. Smith was born September 3, 1933 in Halifax County, VA, son of the late John Williams Smith & Evelyn Carlton Smith and was husband of more than 70 years to Mary Louise Zimmerman Smith who survives.   He was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp. after 37 years of service, was a member of Cavel Baptist Church for 70 years where he was a member of the choir and served as a Deacon, and was a veteran of the NC Army National Guard.

Raymond enjoyed vegetable gardening, singing, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.   

Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Phyllis Bowes of Raleigh, NC, Ricky Smith & wife, Luanne of Elon, NC, Nelson Smith & wife, Libby of Rocky Mount, NC, Glenn Smith & wife, Leslie of Opelika, AL, six grandchildren, Russell Bowes & wife, Carly, Bryan Smith & wife, Penny, Karmon Smith, Adam Smith & wife, Jessica, Rachel Gonwa & husband, Joe, Evelyn Smith, seven great-grandchildren, Campbell Bowes, Calen Bowes, Harper Bowes, Brandon Smith, Jordan Smith, Aubrey Downing, Ruby Gonwa, three brothers, Howard Smith of Roxboro, NC, Richard Smith & wife, Becky, Robert Smith & wife, Mary all of Halifax, VA, two sisters, Nancy Haskins & husband, Myron of Halifax, VA, and Doris Tuck of Roxboro, NC.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith is preceded in death by a brother, Oscar James Smith, and son-in-law, Gerald Thomas Bowes.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at Cavel Baptist Church with Dr. Jon Glass officiating.  Interment will follow in the Person Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends and guests from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church and other times at the home.

Pallbearers will be Brinn Clayton, Cecil Gentry, Mickey Sartin, Barry Whitfield, Martin Whitfield, and Wesley Whitfield.

Special thanks to his niece, Sherri Sartin for her loving care during this difficult time for our family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cavel Baptist Church, 1885 North Main Street, Roxboro, NC 27573.
